I Can't Make the Change for You

I wrote this several years ago. I felt it was time to put it up. This friend in the poem has made a huge change and is now following Christ. :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought you saw…but apparently you are still in love with sin. Why can’t you see that none of that is worth it. It’s SICK! I tell you, and just plain wrong! Why don’t you get? I’m tired of your lies…Foolish…you’re ending your life. So, disappointed. Everyone is. I know it ain’t easy, but you got to stop it! I never been through that stuff, and I’m glad! I’m living for Him. I don’t care what others think. All I care is what my Lord and Savoir thinks. If others think of me as a “Christian girl”, So what! My faith is not a weakness. It is my ultimate strength! I couldn’t live without. I would be dead if it weren’t for Christ. Please don’t look at me as the perfect girl…Because I’m not! I’m far from it. And I am no judge. But Christ is! You can’t sit on the fence forever, the day is coming, soon... Where will you be then?

God has Come

God has come to us this Christmas.God is with us, Emmanuel. Praise be His name. With such good family and friends among us how could it not be more obvious? God loves us. He sent his only son for us. And that is the greatest gift of all. So, remember Him this holiday, no remember Him this year, as many more blessings come. Praise be His name in all He will do.

Toy Story

After watching Toy Story and getting ready for college, I started thinking about my past. How have I've grown? I went back to my childhood and discovered my old toys. The silly old things, played with everyday. Who would have know that they would have impacted my life so much? Here is a poem through the journey through my mind as I reflect on the past.

----------------------------------------------

Every child has their hopes and dreams. And where do those dreams start? In the toy box. The place where you are in control. You always know what is going on, and whats going to happen next. A place where you will never be judged or ridiculed. A place of complete freedom and self expression. Toys are a child's best friends. Always there for them, willing to listen. And what happens to them when they are out grown? Thrown away, tossed in the attic, or donated. During this holiday season, think about those special toys you played with as a child. All those wonderful memories. Look at the kids today, what toys do they have? Video games, tv, and movies? Really? With those toys kids can't use their imaginations and creativity. So, why not turn off the tv and share with this generation your toys, your stories. You know the toys would have wanted that. Think about, what were your toys' names? What were their stories? write them down and share.

What's Going Down

Wassup?
Lord where are you?
I'm all confused.
My dad has been in and out of the hospital
Where were you then?
My mom cries at night
It hurts me inside
Where were you then?
My brother has had his heart broken
Where were you then?
I try to drum up the beat
But I feel defeat
For when the day ends
its all a shame
I just feel so sad and afraid
What to do?
Where are you?
I turn the corner and see
that you're right beside me
You have never left my side
You have always been there
You always will be
Why can't I see?
Its me?
I'm the one who makes the mistakes
That forgets you!
What does it take?
How could I have been such a fool!
You never forget me
You're always there
With tons of care
you'll be there
I may not have the strength to go on
But I can always count on yours
You're more than strong enough for both of us
I don't need the weight of the world on my shoulders
You got that covered
You got it all
Now times can be difficult
and I can be sick of it
Sometimes I just want to scream and yell
Other times I don't want to tell
And I just want to cry
But you're always by my side
I don't have to wonder about tomorrow
cause I know you got that covered
You got me all good
And that's enough said
Word

~Miles Hazel~

Straight Up

I don't always know what's going on around me
I often get lost in my head
I just have to remember one thing
Jesus, you are my everything
So, everyone get those hands in the air
Wave them everywhere
Just dance all the time without a care
Cause Jesus is always there
Trust and Believe
Cause you will see
Christ is the King
Lord of everything
Blessed be His name
Blessed be His name
For God's sake, blessed be His name

A Day in the Life of a Sophomore at Holland High

Now I wrote this more than a year ago, I have finished my junior year and will hopefully have that story finished before I enter my senior year. But here's a topical day for me from a day in school.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was intensely studying the inside of my eyelids when my alarm goes off. I hit it. I roll over and see that it is 6:30 am. “Yawn! Got to get up. Groan!” I tell myself. This year is different, not only am I not the ‘Fresh meat’ that Seniors would say, but my brother is the ‘Fresh Meat’. Oh yeah! That was going to be fun. Anyways, I put my feet on the ice cold floor and get up. I stretch to the ceiling then touch my toes. “Wow, I’m stiff.” I tell myself, I talk to myself a lot in the morning. I grab my towel and tip toes up stairs, so my brother won’t wake up. I step up to the last step and see my brother opening his door. He gives me this look. And I then immediately turn and finish my rush upstairs as my brother comes rushing after me with his dogs right behind him. It was a race to the shower. I try to pick up my pace but my brother was right on my heel. I turn the corner and do a sprint to the bathroom. I slip behind the bathroom door and lock it. My brother starts banging on the door in defeat. I quickly take my shower, how refreshing it is to take it with victory running through your blood. I soon am done and exit the bathroom, Matt (my brother) then walks by me to enter the shower while giving me an evil glare. I laugh and head to the table and eat a quick breakfast while doing devotions. I do my finishing touchs on getting ready for school and then look at the clock. It’s 7:30, time to go. I head out to the garage and hop on my moped and take off. A few minutes later I arrive at school. I made good time, It was 7:45. Ten minutes until class, this gives me time to walk around with friends or finish some assignments. At about 7:53 I go to my first hour, Theatre.

I enter Theatre class and everyone is talking. I sit down at my table and we have our debate whether or not if Arby’s serves chicken sandwiches or just talk random stuff. Mr. Sciender then comes out tells us to listen to announcements, the class quiets down some, but it is still pretty noisy. After announcements Sceinder gives his Theatre announcements. We then began class. Theatre class is not like any other class. You do a lot of hands on stuff. Like playing a ton of different theatre games. They are quick thinking games to help us better on stage. Theatre class is fun because you can make a fool of your self without feeling weird. One of the plus sides of theatre class besides being able to freely express yourself, is that you have almost no homework. If you get homework it is only because you need to memorize lines, but it’s not that bad. Lots of joking and fun goes on as we learn. Then the bell rings and first hour is over.

I leave the performing art building and head to the main building. I bump into Kraft on my way to second hour and we do our routinely wassup pass. Then I meet up with my best friend Jane and we walk to the end of the hall below the stairs of my second hour class. We do our annually drink call, then step aside and talk. Devon joins us and we chat for a few. Then the warning bell rings and Jane and I do our special handshake and depart our separate ways. I head upstairs to Chemx with Mr. Sissing. I get to class and see that the door is shut and lock. I then go “oh, stink! We have to do the song ticket today!” Everyone begins to panic and pulls out their binders and quickly try to memorize the song. We all get in line, and Mr. Sissing opens the door. “Why hello guys! Are you ready?” Everyone steps up and one by one everyone sings the scientific method song. Finally it gets to be my turn I sing it and do the motions. WOOHOOO! I passed! Mr. Sissing let’s me. What a relief. I sit down at my desk and wait until everyone is done. Mr. Sissing then boots up his computer and starts up the openings which are short little video clips about some interesting new scientific research. After we watch it we LAP about. Then Mr. Sissing does a character study of the day which I really like. He picks a character like Humility or Encouraging or something like that then he talks about it so that we may learn something about doing better in the world. Mr. Sissing is a very cool teacher, because he really does care about us. Everyday he reminds us that he’s there for us before school, after school, or at lunch if we need extra help. Mr. Sissing then goes over the Mind map (our agenda) for today. Mr. Sissing tries to come with interesting hands on stuff to help us learn better. Like the songs he teaches us. Most of the time we will wine and groan about having to learn a new song, but inside I think we are all excited and happy that Mr. Sissing works hard to come up with these songs and fun ways to help us learn better. One other cool thing is that we have a table partner that we do everything with. My partner is Tyler. He’s pretty cool. We both help each other a lot on stuff we don’t understand. And neither of us is afraid to ask Mr. Sissing for help. Well, after we learn a song or do an experiment or take notes. The bell rings and it is finally time for lunch, which is still at 10:32. But now it’s time for some fun.

I head downstairs and meet up with Jane. We talk about how are second hour went then head to the art room to set our bags down. This year at school I am involved in a whole lot of clubs. FCA, SADD, and Calling-All-Colors. But when I don’t have a meeting then Jane and I head to Speed Way and get some yummy slushies. Jane has a car so, we can get there and back pretty quickly. When we get back we walk the hallways with our slushies and talk and talk to some of our other friends too. We then head to the school’s microwave and I heat up my lunch that I packed. Jane and I then take a seat and split it. Yum yum. We take another walk around then start heading to the green hall for class. Jane tries to quickly gulp down her slushie before her third hour class, because her teacher can’t stand drinks in her class. The warning bell rings and we depart yet again our separate ways. I head into one of my other favorite classes, History.

History class is awesome! Awesome classmates, Awesome subject, and of course awesome teacher. Mr. T teaches in a very interesting way. He loves to make the class a fun, joking, yet serious environment. Some of the same people our in this class as in my world history class last year. One of them would be Eric. He definantly lives the class up even more with personality. Mr. T announces to us that we are going to be playing jeopardy today. Some quickly try to get in a order that will hopely get them in the same group as their friends. Mr. T then counts us off into groups. We split up and quickly try to form a circle with our chair with our group to get the extra bonus points. We quickly sit down and yell done just a few seconds before the other team. We cheer because we get the extra points. Mr. T announces the prize of the day is extra credit on the test. Everyone starts giving their team the look that they must win because they NEED the extra help. I feel pretty confident because I studied pretty hard the previous night and took good notes. And I have good team members: Jason, Liz, Jeff, and Matt. I give named spokesperson and the game is on. We are given some tough questions but we nail them or are completing humiliated. Just kidding, but it does get pretty intense. Until it comes to the final round where its double or nothing. Our team decides to bet it all. We are in suspense as we wait for the question hoping that we did not just make a mistake. But we decided to go big or go home. Finally the question is given. I let out a sigh of relief because I know the answer. Then a problem arises, Liz Wolter is positive that the answer is something else. Uh oh, one minute left to decide before we have to hand in our answer. The group is split, which one is correct? We quickly just randomly write one down hope that it is right. We hand it in with just a few seconds to spare. We all cross our fingers hoping that ours is correct. He’s reads off the other groups. Lots of cries of victory and defeat. Then Mr. T comes to our card he reads it and pauses. He then says to us, “This is killing you to know if it is correct isn’t it?” We all yell, “Yes!” He laugh then says slowly, “iiiittttt……iiiiisssss….(pause breathing break)……correct!” We all leap out of our seats and yell excitedly! We won! We run over to Mr. T’s desk to write down our names for the extra credit. We then put the room back together and gather our things and wait by the door for the bell to ring. As we wait we all ‘fellowship’ with one another until the bell rings. Then it’s a mad pack to get through the door. We all say bye and hi five each other and then I meet up with Jane to head to…..fourth hour!

Jane and I walk between third and fourth hour to get a change of pace. Probably the best thing about fourth hour is that we have it together. It’s our only class that we have together. So, we walk back inside and head to Math class. We take our usual seats and chat some more. The bell rings and Ms. Wallace and Ms. Van Laan (her student teacher) come in and set up for the day. Jane and I continue to talk and the rest of class does too while they get set up. Ms. Wallace then announces it is time to get started. She starts off with a question of the day which is just a random fun question like What’s your dream job, What’s your favorite animal, What did you do this weekend, and stuff like that. We then get down to business and Ms. Wallace let’s Ms. Van Laan take over and teach us. Ms. Van Laan is a great teacher, I love her style of teaching, it’s very fun and hands-on. She tells that we are playing a game today, Final Four Geometry. We quickly arrange into teams. Jane and I join up and recruit Claudia and Jimmy over to our team. We decide to name our team the ‘Sphere Monkeys’. I then pull out our mascot ArchieKins and Funkie Junkie. We are very excite to get started. The game goes on. It’s a lot of fun. Some questions easy some hard. But we fly by the best we can. Finally the moment of truth comes and we faced with trying to make a basket to gain extra points. I’m up to try to score my team holds their breaths as I aim and prepare to take shot. I grasp the ball and close my eyes and shoot the ball. It tumbles through the air, it begins to round the rim, I fall to the ground hoping it will make it in. Silence falls across the room. Finally, the makes it’s last loop and it…..falls in!!! Yahoo! We win! The Sphere Monkeys jump up and cheer. We win!! Then the bell rings and fourth hour is over.
We depart and Jane and I head to our final class. We take a short cut to avoid traffic and then stop at are corner to chat before we have to go to class. We do are special handshake again and take off for our final hour. I take a deep breath then prepare to enter my fifth hour, American Literature.

Now, I like the subject, it’s just that my English class is, how should I put this? Oh yeah, rowdy. And I’m right in the crossfire. I still enjoy it, but sometimes it does get stressful. Especially when you’re trying to read. But the class can be fun too. Ms. Mawdsley is the teacher, and she is a sweet person, but you can tell at times she just wants to pull her hair out. She tries her best to try to get the class under control. She finally decided to form reading groups which seemed to help a lot. It made it much more enjoyable and more controllable class. Occasionally, we will have art projects for us to express what we learning while reading the different kind of books. I love this because I love art projects. After some hot debates on some random topics the bell rings and class has ended. Finally, school is over! I race out and meet up with Jane. We hang out and walk around the school chatting and giving the cameras ‘peace offerings’. Then we at last depart our separate ways for home or sports practice.

Well, there you have it. Yet another year in my life as a Holland High student. Only the future tells what is in store for me the coming years. I can hardly believe that I am half way done with highschool. It’s been a blast. I absolutely love it. I will never forget all the memories I had here. Thanks for all the wonderful memories, I look forward to more in the future as I enter my Junior and Senior year. Peace Out!

A Special Place in My Heart

This is another special memory I wrote based on precious moments with my grandparents. I never want to forget these times.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was enjoying the warmth of the nice soft, fleece blankets. When suddenly they are ripped from me and I felt two strong hands push hard into my sides. I squirm and try to escape and let out a scream. I turn to see my grandfather to continue to tickle me as he yells, “Tickle Alarm! Tickle Alarm!” I giggle as I rolled out of bed. He gives me a great big smile and asks me, “Are you ready for some breakfast, little chef?” I squealed. “Yes!” My grandfather walks out to the kitchen while I shut the door, and then put on my jeans. I then race out to the kitchen and put on my little apron. “Are you ayeing the toaster?” asked my grandfather. “Yep! Ready for duty!” We quickly get breakfast assembled and then sit down to enjoy it. My grandmother joins us. “This is delicious, dear.” She exclaims. “Why thanks honey, but I couldn’t have done it without my little bit!” He replies. I show a huge smile of pride and continue to eat. We finish up and then I give my Grandpa the ‘bill’. “What do you mean I own 300,000 dollars for breakfast? I did most of the cooking!” I giggled then darted away before he could get me. But it was too late. He swoops me up in his arms, and before I know it, I’m upside down. I let out another squeal and laugh. My grandpa lays me on the floor and sits on me. He then begins to tickle me. I laugh and yell, “Stop! I’m going to end up wetting my pants!” My grandpa lets up a bit and says, “What about that Bill?” I try to catch a breath of air and finally was able to let out, “You can pay me back later.” My grandpa smiles and gets up off of me. He stands up and gives me a hand up. He lets out a gush of air, and then plops down in his favorite brown chair.

He says, “Come here Little Bit.” I come towards him. He picks me up and sets me in his lap. It was time for my favorite time, snuggle time. I snuggle up in a small little ball really closely to him. He then begins to close his eyes. I let out a little yawn. He opens his eyes a crack and looks down at me and smiles. I look back at him and return the smile. My Grandpa gives me a little squeeze, I come in closer. I felt so happy. My grandpa had closed his eyes again. I turned my head to his ear and said, “I love you Grandpa.” He opens his eyes again that looked a little wet. And tells me, “I love you too, Little Bit, And I always will.” I gave my Grandpa another hug, then slowly my eyes droop to a close too.

Now that I’ve grown bigger I can’t snuggle on my grandpa’s lap anymore. But I still love him the same way. And I will always think back on those days when I did curl up with him for that special snuggle. We have had many cherished memories, and I will never forget them. But most of all I will never forget my grandfather and the impact he has had in my life. Encouraging me to go on farther, and that I can do anything. I love you Grandpa.

Dear to My Heart

This is written for my grandmother. This is one of my favorite memories with her. Enjoy.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a chilly night. A night for fire places and hot chocolate. But that’s not what this night was going to be about. Mom and Dad were going out. So as a little 6 year old girl with bouncy pigtails I was excited because this meant a night with Grandma. This would be a special night, I knew it would be fun and remember able. We pulled into the drive way and I could see Grandma in the house waiting for me. Dad opened the door for me and I ran into the house. There was my warm hearted grandmother with curly hair and always a smile on her face.I leapt into her arms for a hug. Then Mom and Dad gave kisses to me and said, “Now you be a good girl for Grandma.” I nodded happily and helped pushed them out the door. They chuckled and yelled back, “Thanks for watching her Sarah! We’ll be back by 9!” They scurried away and now it was just my grandma and I. “So, little Miss, what are we going to do tonight?” I thought hard. I wrinkled my nose and got my thinking face on. It had to be perfect. “Let’s make cookies!” I grinned. “Okay sweetheart. I’ll get the ingredients and you get the cookie cutters. “ I scampered across the kitchen and gathered all the pretty cookie cutters I could find. I brought them to the counter and placed them next to the flour. “Alrighty Elizabeth, first thing we got to do is…” “Wash our hands!” I shouted. I rushed into the bathroom to clean my hands. After a good little bit I raced back to the kitchen. “Now, we going to have to get our hands dirty a bit…” “Then why did we wash our hands if their just getting dirty again?” My grandma laughed at my comment. “Oh, it will be alright.” She smirked to herself and turned and gave me a squeeze. We made the squishy dough. She then took off the lid to the flour. “Okay, so we need to lay out some flour to roll the dough in. Just scoop it out and put it on the counter. “Okay” I said. I grabbed a large over flowing cup of flour and dumped it on the counter. We started rolling the dough out. I placed my tiny little hands into the flour. I realized my hands were really dirty with flour covering them. I turned to the side and smacked my hands together. A large puff of flour went flying into my grandma’s face. She now looked like a ghost. I thought she would be mad, but instead she laughed and tickled me. I laughed too. “Be careful where you clap!” She smiled. We continued to roll out the cookies. I did forget sometimes where to clap my hands, grandma in return clapped in my direction as well. We giggled we laughed, it was a precious moment. By the time we finished we both looked like white ghosts. Grandma turned to me and said, “We better get you cleaned up before your parents come back. They might think you’re a ghost!” I laughed and nodded. We both got all cleaned up. Grandma and I then decided to make ornaments while the cookies baked. We had lots of laughs and love. At long last 9 came. Mom and Dad walked in. “Hello? We’re back!” I ran up to them both and gave them a big hug. “Was Elizabeth a good girl?” I smiled and grandma nodded. “Yes, she was excellent. We had fun didn’t we Elizabeth?” I grabbed my grandma and gave her a big hug. “I love you grandma. Tonight was fun. “ I went back to the door and put on my shoes and coat. The adults were talking while waiting for me, then I remembered, “Grandma! I never got to eat a cookie! I was having too much fun!” Grandma turned to me. “Oh, well, that’s not right! I guess you’ll have to come back tomorrow to have some!” I squealed with delight. I gave grandma a big kiss and raced out the door. I couldn’t wait for tomorrow to come! As we pulled out the drive way and waved good bye. I realized that I really loved my grandma and that tonight was a special night. Just her and me. And now that I’m older I realize that I didn’t want to go back to Grandma’s house for the cookie, no I wanted to go back to spend more time with her. Cause I love her.

Blinded

Lord, why can't they see?
Why can't they see you?
you perform for them everyday,
but they still don't get it.
You're what makes them tick.
Yet they are so blind.
I diplay you everyday.
Hoping that they will see your light shining through me.
I pray for them...
but they still havn't seen.
Iwant them to know that there is a better new life for them.
and all they have to do is look at the cross
They keep saying, "I'll do it tomorrow or some other time, just not now."
But they don't see that this life will be gone soon.
Our purpose in life is to bring glory to you.
It brings tears to my eyes seeing them dishonor you.
I take a stand, but do they see it? see you in me?
Lord, I just want to know...make them see.

~Miles Hazel~

Gone.....Forever

Trials happen everyday. Sometimes painful decisions must be made. Sometimes it may mean a lost friend or a broken heart.
---------------------------
Why Can't you see?
Young girl, we are through!
Why don't you get it!
put yourself in my shoes.
Do you see it now?
Sorry, but those days our over.
We just can't be friends.
Please don't call me.
This is goodbye.
goodbye.

~Miles Hazel~

Trust Broken Down

I have to fight my own battles
No one said it would be easy
but can't you see
That's how it was meant to be

---------------------------------------

I got your back and you have mine
Nothing is going to break that apart
We are in this together
I won't let go
Because with both our hands
we form a heart
It may not look like a lot, but trust me it is.
It is true art
None like it.
This is what we call true friends.

Hope is not Abandoned

Now, I never was an orphan, but I wrote this for a dear friend that was, and this a journey of an orphan's way to becoming a child of God, and having a family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Abandoned and alone.
Then you come and raise me from the dust.
You raise me to the sky
I feel as if I’m flying!
Then you tell me.
Do you want this to last?
I cry yes! Forever!
You grab my hand and hold it tight.
You point to the cross.
That is way.
The way to eternal love.
Then ran to the cross
At the foot of the cross was Jesus.
I jumped in his arms
He says, “I know you are alone,
But now longer shall you be that way.”
“But, Lord, who? I am but an orphan, the Unwanted one.”
The lord replies, “you may have been abandoned,
But you are wanted. I want you more than you could ever know.”
Tears come falling off my face, “you love me?”
The Lord responds, “yes, more than anything.”
I grab him and hug him. I was filled with joy.
No longer was I a unwanted burden, I was now a child of God.
“I will use you in many ways, the person that showed you the cross,
Loves you also. She is going to take you and raise you as a beautiful Daughter.
She is adopting you.” Says the Lord.
“Oh, Lord! I’m overwhelmed! I am filled with joy”
“Child, don’t you don’t have to call me Lord, just call me daddy. I will always be with you.” Says the Lord. “Alright, Daddy, I will do you proud!”
I step down and grab the ladies hand who showed me the cross.
The Lord replies, “The road ahead will not be easy, but with the people surrounding you and me, you can get through anything. I love you”
I grab his hand too and say, “Please, both stay by my side, and don’t let go. I love you.” The Lord replies, “I will never let go.”

This is not the End

This is another short story that I wrote. I kind of put myself into it when my grandmother died of cancer. This story is dedicated to her and everyone who has gone through losing a lost one through cancer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Checkmate!” Said Cindy. “No fair! You cheated!” I yelled. “Uh uh! I played fair and square!” Cindy said back to me with a smile. We both started laughing. “Oh, Cindy, you make me laugh what would I do without you ?” I said. “Win for once.” Teased Cindy. “Hahaha…very funny.” We both signed and looked at each other smiling. “So, how everything in the outside world?” asked Cindy. “Not much, everyone misses you. How long do you have to stay here?” I asked. Cindy let out a big sigh then looked out the window of her small, colorless hospital room. “I wish I could tell you. The Doctors say the cancer isn’t looking good, but I feel fine right now.” I grab Cindy’s hand. “Are you sure you’re going to be okay? I don’t know what I do if something happened to you.” Cindy pats my hand and says, “No matter what happens it is all in God’s hands. He’s looking out for me.” I quickly reached for my cheek to wipe away my tear. “Morgan, just think about it, spring is almost here. The snow is starting to melt and then flowers will blossom, our town will be like a garden. Then before you know summer will be here, and we’ll be at the beach until the stars come out then we’ll go inside and do girl gossip like we use to do….” Cindy then stopped. I picked off where she left off. “Before you got cancer.” She looked at me. “Yeah, before that, just trust me, I’ll be out of here soon. I have a feeling.” The nurse then walked in with her Bright color clip board. Cindy looked up smiling and said, “Hi Macy! What is it?” Macy then said, “I’m sorry to have to tell you girls this, but visiting hours are over. Cindy, we have to give you some more Kemo.” Cindy smiled but sighed. She then looked at me. “It was nice chatting with you. Don’t forget all of our summer plans!” I leaned over Cindy’s bedside and gave her a hug trying to fight back tears. “I won’t forget.” I told her. She then pushed something into my hand. “Don’t open it until you leave.” Cindy told me. I nodded my head then began to walk towards the door. I turned again and looked at Cindy. “Goodbye, Cindy. You’re my bestest best friend I could ever have!” She smiled and said, “Right back at you!” I gave a final wave then left. It was hard to leave. The walls that were fighting my tears were beginning to break. I ran to my car and slammed the door shut. The walls broke and tears fled out. I forced myself to stop. I told myself, “God is watching over Cindy. Nothing is going to happen.” I then looked at what Cindy put in my hand, it was an envelope. I was about to open it, but something inside told me know wasn’t the time. I finally decided now was the time to pull out of the parking lot and go home. It was getting pretty late, and I had school in the morning.

I arrived home. I walked in and was greeted by my mother. “How did it go? How is she?” my mother asked. “It went well, she said she was doing okay. But I’m dead tired and need to get some sleep.” I replied to my mother. “Okay, sweetie, sleep tight.” As I turned away and started to walk up to my room I could see a single tear roll down my mother’s eye. I close my door and lay on my bed. I folded my hands and closed my eyes, “Lord, please heal Cindy. I want her back.” As I prayed tears leaked out. I then turned onto my pillow and fell asleep.

‘BEEP! BEEP!’ my alarm went off. I turn and hit the snooze button. Wow, what a night. I got up and just fish something out of my drawer. I then pulled the clothes over my body and finished getting ready. I stepped out of my room and close the door. I slid down the stairs into the kitchen. I said hi to my mother and grabbed my favorite cereal. I scooped shovels full of cereal in my mouth. I placed my bowl in the sink then scooted my way out the door. I started walking to school. I then looked at Cindy’s house, a couple down from us. It looked abandoned. Cindy’s family must be at the hospital with her. I did a quick little prayer for Cindy as I walked. I then took a deep breath and walked into school. The halls were filled with kids making lots of noise, but the halls seemed different, like something was missing, Cindy. I tried not to think of her condition and just think of our summer plans. Yes, this summer was going to be the best. Cindy would be better, and then we would have all the fun we could together. I started to smile as I thought of this. I walked into my homeroom and sat down. The bell rang then everyone quickly took their seats. Class began. Mr. Williams began teaching us all different kinds of stuff, but I wasn’t really paying attention. I was staring out the window thinking of summer, oh the hope summer brings. The phone then rings and Mr. William walks over to answer it. Everyone then looks out the window, probably thinking the same thing, summer. Mr. Williams hangs up the phone then walks over to my desk. “Morgan, you need to go to the main office. And take all your stuff with you.” Mr. Williams tells me. I gather my things and walk out of class. I walk down the hall to the main office, I couldn’t think of what I did wrong. I walk in to see my mother standing there with face fighting back tears. I immediately drop my back pack. “What’s wrong mom? What happened?” I yelled. She tried so hard to fight back tears, but some started to slip through. “Morgan, sweetie, I have some good news and bad news.” I started to feel really confused and scared. “What is it?” I gulped. “The good news is that Cindy is no longer in pain…” my mother pushed out of her month. “And she is cure? The cancer is gone?!” I begged with hope. “I’m sorry honey, no. Early this morning, Cindy has became an angel. She is gone.” Right at that very moment my world ended. I clasped on the floor. My mom rushed over to me and hugged me tightly saying, “She’s in no more pain, she’s in no more pain.” I grab her closer and cry. My mom helps me up and leads me out to the car. On the ride home my mother acts brave for me and rubs my knee. I continue to cry. We pull into our drive way. My turns and looks at me, “I know this is hard. It’s hard for me too, but she had a good fight. Be thankful the moments you did have with her. Anyways, I got you out of school for the rest of the day and tomorrow if you need it. For now get some rest or go for a walk, whatever helps. And I’m always here for you.” She leans over and gives me a great big hug. She then gets out of the car and helps me out. I walk inside quickly to my room. I lay on my bed and cry, “Why Lord, Why?” I turn over and spot the envelope that Cindy gave me the previous night. With an unsteady hand, slowly grab it. I sit up and open it. Out falls two items; a gold locket and letter. I grab the letter then read it,

“Dear beloved friend Morgan, I know times may seem hopeless. But its okay. I know I won’t always be here. Whether I die tonight or fifty years from now, everything is okay, because I have the Lord as my savoir. When it is my time to go, I’m ready because I will be in the arms of Jesus. You have meant a lot to me. You have been there for me through thick and thin. I love you. And I don’t want you to be sad for me. I want you to be happy and live your life to the fullest. Summer is near, then we’ll have a blast. I feel that freedom is near. I also enclosed in this envelope my heart locket. I want you to have it so it can you remember the good times, and to help you be strong in the difficult times. Inside it a picture of you and I. Alright, I see you pulling into the parking lot. I have to finish this before you get here. Be strong! Love ya!”

Love, your best friend,

Cindy

I quenched the locket in my hand and wipe away my tears. I put the necklace around my neck and look at the picture inside, it was us having fun at the beach. I remember that day, my mom took the picture. It was the day before Cindy was diagnose with Cancer. I close the locket and grip it tightly. I place the letter on my night stand and walk out of my room to the outside. I started to walk towards Cindy’s house, a lifeless, gloomy house it now seems. I continue to walk pass it thinking of Cindy. Something then caught my eye, a single rose growing in Cindy’s yard. Surrounded by snow this rose grew. It was a beautiful, bright red rose. It lit up the house, like Cindy would. I started think, ‘This is not the end. It is only the beginning. Spring is soon coming, just like Cindy said. A time to start fresh and clean.’ I knelt down by the rose. ‘Cindy, I will see you again, and you’ll be sitting in Jesus’ lap. I won’t be sad anymore, I will live out our summer plans and I will not let your memory and impact die.’ I then pulled my wallet out and placed a picture of Cindy by the rose. I stood up and looked down at the rose and picture. “I may have to say goodbye right now, but it is not a final good bye. For I will see ya again. Goodbye Cindy.” I then walk away back to my house, her memory never forgotten.

A Day in the Life of a Freshmen at Holland High

My alarm goes off at 6:00 am. I hit the snooze button. Around 7:00 am my dad comes in saying, "Elizabeth Hazel Ortiz, do you not know what time it is?!" I then would lift my head up with my eyes close nodding, then lie back down. He would then yell at me to get out of bed before he dumped ice cold water on me. I then leaped out of bed. I then jumped in and out of the shower at lightening speeds and throw on my clothes that I had cleverly laid out the previous night. It's 7:41 am, class starts at 7:55 am. I grab my lunch and raced out the door. No time for breakfast. I pulled out my scooter and took off. I tried not to speed, but I was determined to get to school on time. I got to school and pulled in and parked by the bike rack. I looked inside the window and saw the clock. It was 7:51 am. AAHHH! I took off my helmet and locked my scooter. It was time to run. I entered the school. The one minute warning bell rung. Oh boy. I was trying not to panic. I started sprinting down the hallway. I had to be on time. I was getting closer. I had to make it to 902. Passing 891..893...897...10 seconds...899...5 seconds....900...2 seconds...902. RING! I made it! I started dancing and cheering! Then I stopped and realized that everyone was staring right at me. I blushed and put my head down and quickly walked over to my desk and sat down. School had now began.

My first hour was study hall. But its no ordinary class, because my coolest friend Mackenzie is my table partner. She always brings her Mary Poppins bag. We call it that because it has just about anything in it! Everything from nail polish to a broken flip-flop, a dirty sock to a whole new outfit, and that's not the beginning of what's in there. But first hour is always fun. I get some work done then I chat with Mackenzie or paint nails or see what’s new in the bag that day. Then our time together hanging is interrupted by the bell a sign that first hour is over. We depart our separate ways to go to second hour.

I walk through the halls talking to people and giving them high-fives and hugs. Kraft and I do our daily routine of passing each other while tilting our heads up and saying watsup. After that I grab a quick drink of water then take a deep breath. I entered my second hour.

My second hour is extraordinary. It’s the best class of the day. It’s World History with Colin Mulder. Mr. Mulder is an awesome teacher. His class is one of a kind. We have so many inside jokes, we’ll never forget them. He is always starting off the class with current events. So, we can have a better understanding of what is going on in the world today. Everyone gets a chance to share something they learned in the news if they want. One day someone may have thrown a baby out a window or someone may have stolen a ring off a dead person and put it on a carrot or maybe just debate whether the man with the blue skin is really blue or if it is violet. Either way we have a great time learning about our world. Mr. Mulder then turns around and discusses the agenda for the day with us on the board. Meanwhile, Katie pulls out her phone and begins text messaging. Andrew then yells, “Katie is that a phone?!” Katie drops the phone and shoots her hands up to the sky and yells, “No, No, it is not a phone!” Mr. Mulder snickers to himself then continues talking while motioning Katie to put her phone away. “Today we are going to watch a video.” “A video or movie?” asked Jacquie. “A movie.” Mr. Mulder answers. The class cheers! “However, the movie at some scenes can be lovely dovely inappropriate, so we will skip those scenes.” Explains Mr. Mulder. “What are the people doing in those scenes that we can’t see?” Asks Eric. Mr. Mulder responds with, “Well ahhh..you see…” Jacquie interrupts by saying, “Isn’t it obvious? They are playing Monopoly and the game is getting to intense.” Mr. Mulder then says, “Yes, they are playing Monopoly!” The movie is out on and during the movie there is lots of commentary, sighs, laughs, screams, and crying. But then the movie ends and we either have to take notes, read, listen, or fill our packet. With the last couple minutes, Mr. Mulder announces a test on Friday, and that we’ll play the ‘review game’ tomorrow. Everyone gets excited, because the review game is intense with a chance of extra credit! The bell rings and everyone crams through the door. Because it is one of the best times of the day, Lunchtime.

For Lunch some students go off campus for lunch and some stay and eat the cafeteria food. Holland’s cafĂ© isn’t that bad at all, but it is almost all junk food. So, I decided to step up and eat healthy lunches. So, I would take my healthy, yet good tasting, lunch from home and bring it to the cafeteria to heat it up. I then would head to the Uno room. Mr. Osborn greets me warmingly and asks how I’m doing. We have a nice chat, but then we get down to business, he pulls out the Uno cards. Everyone gathers around and the Uno tournament begins. There are cries of victory and whines of defeat. The game gets very intense when the game gets down to the last two, but then the bell rings. Lunch is over. Everyone is disappointed, but then I yell back, “I’ll get you tomorrow!” Awww…Lunch. Good times, but now it is time for 3rd hour, English.

English is one of my favorite subjects. And the teacher, Mr. Emerson is another one of the best that Holland has to offer. As soon as class starts the joking begins. Mr. Emerson begins making some kind of joke about freshmen, we all laugh even though we are all freshmen. Emerson then tells everyone to pull out their journals and write about the topic on the board. After a few minutes, Emerson has some people stand up and tell the class what they wrote about or comment on the book that we are reading. Some people do an excellent job and present well. However, some of the dumb freshmen (as Emerson would put it) get up and talk about random stuff like Count Dracula or chicks. Emerson just laughs and sighs, then gets up and begins teaching us the English stuff, but then it is time to do the reading of “Romeo and Juliet”. Emerson asks who wants what part, everyone raises their hands begging for different parts. Jason Darling then stands up and says, “I want to be the nurse.” He said this is in his normal voice that happens to be very deep. Silence fills the room. Mr. Emerson says, “Okay I guess Jason is the nurse, but can you get the voice high enough? Because it is a woman.” Jason says in a high voice, “How’s this?” Everyone is astonished and begins to laugh. Emerson starts laughing with tears and says, “That’s fine.” The reading then starts and everyone snickers while Jason does his nurse voice. Awww…Good times then the bell rings, third hour is over.

I rush to the bathroom to get in line with the other girls who are dying to go, but with only six minutes for a pasting period, it doesn’t give you much time to do your business. So, girls are trying to hold it in while others are making make-up adjustments. Finally it is my turn! I go in and sit, then the one minute bell rings. Yikes! I jump off the seat and wash my hands quickly. I run to my fourth hour. Can’t be late! Quickly high five a couple of people while running. Then I slow done before I run into the door. I enter. Perfect timing, the bell just rung. I made it on time. On time to Biology.

Now, I’m now science nut, but I do enjoy the class. It is taught by Mr. Vanharlem, but everyone calls him Mr. V. Mr. V reminds us all to do be in our assigned seats, or he’ll mark us absent. Some students quickly separate from their friends and return to their seats. Mr. V does the attendance. Ali asks to if she can go to the bathroom, and Mr. V responds, “Do you really want me to explain to you how the inside of your body goes through to release the urine?” “Mr. V no! May I please use the bathroom?” says Ali. “Yes, you may use the bathroom, but do you have a planner?” says Mr. V. “No, but I really have to go!” responds Ali. Mr. V then points to the class’s hall way pass, the turtle shell. “Fine, I’ll use the turtle shell.” Says Ali while grabbing the turtle shell with a napkin. “But I’m not touching it!” Ali yells as she leaves. Mr. V snickers to himself as he walks over to his closet. Everyone starts smiling. Mr. V opens the cabinet and starts thinking of which item to pull out. He pulls out his old snake skin. He walks over Ali’s seat and places the snake skin on her seat. Ali’s table partner isn’t to thrilled about. But plays along. Mr. ssshhhh us, to make sure no one tells. We all giggle, but then remain silent as Mr. V walks back to his desk. Ali walks in and comments on how disgusting the shell is but then goes to her seat. She pulls out her seat and begins to scream! Her table partner, Phyllis then jumps up too and screams! Everyone laughs, and Mr. V walks over and picks up the skin and says, “Come on it is just a little skin!” The girls squeal and run to the other side of the room. Mr. V decides to have a little fun and chases them around the room with the snake skin. The girls tip over chairs and anything to get away, until Mr. V finally had enough and puts the snake skin down while the girls finally take their seats. Now teaching begins, but they would be lots more joking around happening through out the class time. Mr. V has us do a lot of hands on activities like; dissecting owl pellets, dancing the hoe down, creating posters, making dragons and naming them and tons of other stuff. Biology class is fun because of all the people. Then Mollie and I stand up and have a class discussion on creation and start debating about evolution, Mr. V doesn’t say anything, but he lets it continue. But sadly, our debate is interrupted by the bell, class is over. We make our ending comments then depart our separate ways. I stop and pray and thank God for giving me a chance to stand up and witness for him, but now it is time for the last hour, Math.

Luckily, my Algebra class is just a couple doors down from my biology class. So, I chill with my friends and relax for the six minutes. However the one minute bell rings and I then walk into my 5th hour Algebra class. When I enter, it is like a war zone. The naughty boys throwing pencils and papers and who knows what else at the teacher. The one good thing about the class is that Mackenzie has that class with me. Yes, the same Mackenzie from my first hour class. Unfortunately, we are the only two girls in 5th hour, surrounded by about 10 guys. Mackenzie and I sit in our ”safe corner” away from the guys. Luckily, we have a good teacher who does her best to keep things under control, Mrs. Johns. She is an amazing teacher, and it is her first year at the school, like me. Mrs. Johns is not only my math teacher, but my also my case load manager as well, so we know each other pretty well. Anyways, back to class. The boys are pretty rowdy and crude. Not all through, some are actually nice and calm. But the majority make bad jokes and always acting in the wrong matter. However, Mrs. Johns knows how far is too far, and is not afraid to send someone to ISS. But she is also merciful and will put the person’s name on the board to let them know they need to cut it out. Even through the class is difficult at times, it is also enjoyable. Mrs. Johns teaches us in different ways. Sometimes we’ll create posters, warm-ups questions, and lots of little hands on activities. Everytime we do something good, she gives us a piece of paper and we put our name on it. She then puts it in the Johns Jar. At the end of the week she takes the Johns Jar and draws a name out of it. Whoever wins gets a one dollar treat of their choice. It’s a cool idea, and helps us pay better attention. Every now and then she’ll talk to us about life and to be bucket fillers, not bucket dippers. This means that we need to try to make people happy and feel special rather than making them feel down and depress. It all makes it to be a better world to live in. Through all the hardships of that class, it is still enjoyable and helps you grow to be a better person. And of course have a better understanding of Algebra. Then yet again class is interrupted by the bell, but this time it is okay because it is the bell that school is out!

I immediately race to the door. Awww…school is done for the day, now freedom! I start skipping done the hallway while singing the high school musical song, “What Time is It?” Well, there it is, day in the life of a freshmen at Holland High. It’s a crazy life, and it only gets crazier as life goes on in high school. These truly our the best years of your life. So, I’m doing everything I can to enjoy them. Life is precious, so I’m not going to waste it! Well, it’s time to go home, and relax and have fun. Because it starts all over again.

The Season of Tuliptime

I wrote this article based on Holland, MI's tuliptime. I wrote this as a sample I did that I gave to my highschool's yearbook in hopes of making the yearbook staff. Sadly, I did not make. However, this did not stop my passion for writing. Enjoy! :)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuliptime, a time to celebrate with friends and family. A time for fun and laughter. There are many aspects to Tuliptime. People from all over the world come to celebrate the festival with us. It is true that the main attraction is indeed the tulips, hence the name tulip time. However, the second biggest attraction is the Dutch Dancers. Now there lies many tales with in that. No tourist knows all the blusters and hard work that has gone into learning how to dance. They ask many questions and take lots of pictures, but they never will truly understand. Dutch Dancers prep months before Tuliptime to get the dance perfect. They also have to go through tough inspections to make sure the costume is absolutely perfect. You can not buy a costume from a store, each has to be made by the dancer. Let me tell you, it is not cheap. Next, there is the shoes. The shoes are made completely made of wood, and are very hard at that! To help make them more wearable. Each dancer wears anywhere between 6-9 pairs of socks, but it still isn’t very comfortable. And you easily get blusters from them. But through all of this, it is worth it to represent not only our school, but the city of Holland. It brings great joy to see all the smiling faces watching you show off your heritage. I believe Tuliptime is the greatest small town festival in America.

Describe

What can I say? There are too many words to say to describe you. You have created everything. A person can spend a million lifetimes describing you and that would not even put a dent in your awesome glory. You're loving, amazing, forgiving, merciful, and simply everything good. I love you. The thing I love the best is you can call me daughter and I can call you simply my daddy. You'll never leave me. So, I'll just stay in your arms. You are my savior. Thanks Jesus, no thank you daddy for not giving up on me.
